Botanical Drawing

with Ge Warburton

As a trained arborist, and with an appreciation for the work of May Gibbs and Margaret Preston, Ge Warburton is an artist with a unique eye inspired by Australian native Flora. The time she has spent climbing and pruning trees gives her invaluable knowledge to draw upon capturing the character and beauty of foliage and flowers with ink and paper.

Ge's subjects for her exquisite works are found during her coastal roamings. Her drawings shine with her admiring and delight of flowering gums and banksia seed pods.

During Ephemeral Ge will be leading workshops in botanical drawing. Participants can expect to learn an approach and process to tackling botanical drawing, and be able to take away skills which will give them confidence to continue honing their technique, and experience the pleasure of drawing the beauty of flora.

As an introduction to botany and botanical art,  you will be guided through a process of observing plants and learning to draw them accurately. The basic steps Ge takes when drawing botanical subjects will be demonstrated.

Encouraging children to stop and think miniscule! – to find the hidden patterns, textures and details that are often overlooked. They will learn ways to transfer their discoveries to paper with a focus on creating texture and form.

Spinning is all about finding your rhythm and your inner calm. Spinning wool takes you to that instant happy place of relaxation.

This workshop presents an opportunity to learn the basics of spinning a yarn from wool on a traditional spinning wheel. Participants will learn about wool types, how to draft wool, and how to spin yarn on a wheel. There will be the opportunity to spin greasy (straight off the sheep’s back) wool as well as Tabandy Farm's commercially prepared wool rovings. Tabitha guarantees you will be a spinner by the end of the workshop.

Tabitha has nearly thirty-years’ experience spinning wool and other fibres including camel, rabbit, silk, and cotton. She grows her own wool from her 86 mixed breeds of assorted coloured, rescued and pre-loved sheep on Tabandy Farm in Candelo NSW. Tabitha sends her wool away for processing to Victoria and is a member of the Australian Fibre Collective which gives guarantee that her wool is 100% grown, processed, and manufactured in Australia.

There will be an opportunity to purchase a second-hand wheel at a special price on the day to take home to continue your spinning journey.

This workshop is supported by Bega Valley Shire Council through Bega Valley Regional Gallery.
